Introduction

According to wikipedia, "In economics, disintermediation is the removal of intermediaries in a supply chain: "cutting out the middleman". Instead of going through traditional distribution channels, which had some type of intermediate (such as a distributor, wholesaler, broker, or agent), companies may now deal with every customer directly, for example via the Internet. One important factor is a drop in the cost of servicing customers directly."

But it's also the removal of intermediaries in production of your own artifacts. As a disempowered human being, I felt that I had to "take back the means of production", to be able to act and produce, and to show the production as a simple, normal activity.

This echoes the essay of Rebecca Gordon Nesbitt "Harnessing the means of production" where the YBAs took care of producing and showing their own work in a very fluid and DIY manner.

The work presented here is as much on the art pieces as well as the praxis and the Do It Yourself attitude. I intend to share as much the result of the work as the guerrilla tactics that enabled the works.

Yes, you can do stuff in urban organization. This is just about you and your creativity, getting together with some people to do one thing the mainstream organized society doesn't need you to: stop buying stuff, start making things.

Interstice

First example of disintermediation here will be around the Interstice experiment in Paris, France. A friend of mine took me to a place where graphers (ER Team) produced vast murals and paintings. When arriving in this place, I landed two feet into clay that was everywhere. I said "Wow!" both for the big murals and for the sheer quantity of raw material that was below my feet.

From there, I said to my friend that I'd try to make sculpture out of this clay, onsite, and try to fire them as kilns, still onsite, with salvaged woods. Within two weeks that's what we have done.

We've set up a mailing list to follow this experiment: http://fr.groups.yahoo.com/group/interstice/

Produced works

Another part of the project is to produce works. You can come at Interstice and produce some stuff yourself. The place is full of clay, and you just need to find some wood in order to fire your works.

A big part of the produced works will be indeed virtual: social events, situations, meetings, new projects. And these are certainly the most important.
